Medicare savings programs

If you meet certain income requirements, the following state programs may  help pay for all or part of your Medicare Parts A (hospital) and B (medical) premiums, deductibles, coinsurance and copayments.

Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), also known as Extra help

If you qualify, this program may help pay for Medicare Part D prescription drug costs such as your premium, deductible, coinsurance and copayments.

How much Extra Help you receive depends on your income compared to the Federal Poverty Level and resource limitations set by the Social Security Act.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits

SSI benefits help people who are disabled, blind or 65 and older that have limited income and resources. SSI is not the same as Social Security benefits. For more information, visit the Supplemental Security Income webpage on the Social Security Administration website. 

Special Supplemental Benefits for the Chronically Ill (SSBCI) 

SSBCI are benefits available on some Medicare Advantage plans for people with 1 or more eligible long-term chronic health conditions and meet additional qualifying criteria. Visit the CarePlus SSBCI webpage to learn more and see how you may qualify.1

 

1. CareEssentials Allowance and Chronic Condition Care Assistance are special supplemental benefits for members with specific chronic conditions who require intensive care coordination and are at a high risk for hospitalization or other adverse health outcomes. Qualifying conditions may include diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disorders, chronic and disabling mental health conditions, chronic lung disorders, or chronic heart failure, among others. Some plans require at least two conditions. See the plan's Evidence of Coverage for details. If you use this program for rent or utilities, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires it to be reported as income. Contact your local HUD office with questions.
