Need help sorting it out? Here’s what you need to know.

Let’s start at the beginning:

What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?

  • Medicare Advantage was enacted by Congress in 1997 as the Medicare + Choice program.
  • Medicare Advantage Plans are part of the Medicare program and must offer all the benefits of Original Medicare. These plans may include Part D prescription drug coverage as well as other additional benefits. You may find that your out-of-pocket costs are lower than with Original Medicare.
  • Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private insurance companies. In most cases, you are enrolled in a plan for a year.
  • Medicare Advantage Plans differ from area to area, even within a state. Be sure to check with your doctors and pharmacy to determine which plans they accept. Then compare costs, like premiums, deductibles, coinsurance and copayments. Keep your needs in mind when you compare your alternatives.

Remember, you may be eligible to enjoy the real advantages of a Medicare Advantage Plan. So, do your homework, and be prepared.
